RUGBY SECTION

SPORTS FACILITIES

When the Club had the opportunity to build an entirely new complex in 1995, it took that opportunity to create some of the finest state-of-the-art facilities for sport and recreation you can find. Modern facilities, constantly developed and improved, and covering a broad range of sports and recreation, make Hong Kong Football Club unique in Hong Kong. However, it is not merely the ‘bricks and mortar’, that make this such a great Club. It is as much what goes on in those facilities, the activities of our Sports Sections, the training, coaching and programmes of events that are held and, generally, the fun and enjoyment of our Members.

SPORTS FACILITIES

Rugby/SOCCER Pitch

——————–

Nestling in the heart of Happy Valley and surrounded by the spectacular skyline of Hong Kong, the main playing pitch of the Hong Kong Football Club has a unique setting. Linked by tunnel to the main Club building and on view from many points within the Club, it is regarded as its centre piece, a full-sized soccer and rugby pitch within its own floodlit stadium that can seat up to 2,750.

The venue for the prestigious Rugby Tens and Soccer Sevens events, the pitch surface has been graced by top international stars from both codes of football. It is also the home pitch for our many representative and social soccer and rugby sides, hosting up to eight competitive games every weekend during the season. On an average week the pitch can see up to 30 hours of sports action including coaching and training sessions for club teams and by hundreds of young sports people playing Youth Rugby and Soccer.

The significance of the main pitch is evidenced by the substantial multi-million HK$ investment the Club has made in a revolutionary synthetic-based artificial system that provides a reliable world-class playing surface sustainable year-round. Such investment demonstrates the Club’ s commitment to maintaining its status as a leading venue for sport and in this our main pitch plays a central role.

Fitness Centre and Sports Theatre

Fitness Centre Opening Hours

Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 10:00pm

Weekends & Public Holidays, 6:30am to 9:30pm

——————–

The Club’s philosophy, to provide facilities for both serious sports competitors and those who enjoy sports simply for exercise and recreation, is never more apparent than in our Fitness Centre and multi-purpose Sports Theatre. In line with an increasing recognition that it is important to keep both the mind and body in good health, this is an area of on-going improvement, investment and development at Hong Kong Football Club.

Our Fitness Centre offers a vast array of free weight equipment and resistance machines providing an assortment of cardiovascular exercise facilities including cross trainers, treadmills, rowing machines, training bikes, etc. Qualified Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers, both English and Cantonese speaking, provide a free one hour orientation programme to ensure all Fitness Centre users are comfortable with the equipment and offer health and lifestyle fitness consultations on a personal or group basis.

As well as a place for Members to get fit for sport or just keep in trim, the Fitness Centre, used by both sexes across a broad spectrum of ages, (although minimum age is 14), is also a place to meet and exercise with friends.

In fact group exercise is a key theme in our multi-purpose Sports Theatre. Within this air-conditioned, mirrored space which has a purpose-built sprung floor, our very active Fitness Management team provides a range of motivational group exercise programmes for cardiovascular and muscle conditioning as well as mind/body improvement featuring Pilates and Yoga programmes.

As with most facilities in the Club, the versatility of the Sports Theatre is used to the maximum. It also accommodates our youngest Members through playgroups for babies and toddlers, as well as Dance, Taekwondo and Judo sessions for older children – we have even run Lego building classes there!

As much as the actual facilities, it is the innovative activities and events such as Fitness Challenges, a club-wide sports day, a free running club, Dragonboat and MacLehose Trailwalker teams, that make fitness activities a popular part of Club life.

Golf Simulators and Debentures

Golf Simulators Opening Hours

Daily, 7:00am to 10:45pm

——————–

Three advanced video golf simulators provided to Members interested in golf, has been the catalyst for a tremendous growth of interest in the sport amongst members, who have formed a strong and very active Golf Society.

These Society Members can now enjoy the use of debentures at world class golf courses in nearby Macau and Southern China, enabling them to secure tee off times throughout the week with complimentary green fees. This fantastic benefit has contributed further to the popularity of the sport within the Club with Members frequently holding tournaments, matches and overseas golfing tours.

HOCKEY PITCH

——————–

Set within a fully floodlit mini stadium that seats 300, our full-size Hockey Pitch is yet another exceptional multi-purpose facility of the Hong Kong Football Club.

As one of our core sports, Field Hockey has its home at our Hockey Pitch which, situated within the Happy Valley horseracing track, provides a unique setting for playing the game of hockey at all levels. It is often the venue for matches against visiting international teams, which have included some of the top hockey sides in the world, such as England, Holland and Korea. But its main use is by the Club’s 15 representative hockey teams, both men’s and women’s. Over a typical weekend some eight games of competitive hockey will be played on the pitch and it is constantly in use for hockey training as well as for Mini Hockey by children from five to 12 years old.

although this facility is primarily used for hockey, it also represents a venue for many other leisure activities, such as soccer and youth rugby, and is provided to local community groups for activities that include soccer sessions for special needs children.

INDOOR SPORTS HALL

——————–

Just as the main pitch is the centrepiece of the Club, our Indoor Sports Hall, as the largest indoor facility of the Club, provides a centre for many sports and recreation activities.

The versatility of this unique feature of the Club is one of its great attractions. At 32 metres wide and 40 metres long it is big enough to provide an alternative indoor training facility for three of the Club’s core sports: Soccer, Rugby and Hockey. In addition it has been used as a court(s) for competitive local and international Netball matches, organised through the Club’s active Netball Division and there is a growing interest in its use for social and competitive Basketball. In fact, a Basketball Society for this purpose, has recently been formed and there is considerable interest too, in forming a Badminton Society as well.

Very often, however, the hall is divided into a multi sports facility with Members playing recreational games of Badminton and Table Tennis. The hall is also used for junior sports activities including Youth Rugby and Soccer, Junior Cricket, Gymnastics and Trampolining, as well as by some that are even younger in ‘Gym for Tots’ programmes.

Take a look inside the Sports Hall doors or peer in from the second floor viewing balcony, and at any time of the week you may see a five-a-side soccer match, three badminton courts occupied, or a group of toddlers expending some excess energy!

The versatility of this indoor hall even goes beyond sports when our Food and Beverage professionals transform it into an impressive large-scale banqueting hall – check out our banquet offerings for details.

LAWN BOWLING GREENS

——————–

Another unique feature of the Hong Kong Football Club is its capability to provide both outdoor and indoor lawn bowling greens of an international standard. Few other clubs in the world can offer its bowlers non-stop year round bowling, whatever the weather. The Bowls Section of the Club uses these superb facilities constantly, both for competitive local and internal leagues as well as recreational games.

The full-size six rink indoor bowling green is, in fact, the only facility in Asia suitable for staging international indoor tournaments. Together with an outdoor six rink green, set in the heart of Happy Valley, the Club’s bowling facilities continue to play host to international bowling tournaments capable of attracting world class bowlers. Indeed the Club Bowls Section has itself boasted many international class players.

Whilst the Club is proud to stage prestigious international events, the social side of this sport is equally important. Both outdoor and indoor facilities provide players with a place to enjoy the game as well as relax with friends.

Snooker Rooms

Snooker Rooms Opening Hours

It’s a place where Members can enjoy a quiet game of social snooker over a drink with friends.

Squash Centre

Squash Centre Opening Hours

Daily, 7:00am to 10:30pm

——————–

As one of the five core sports in which Club teams compete in local leagues and matches, the facilities for squash at the Hong Kong Football Club are some of the best in Asia. A total of seven international standard glass-backed courts, with two exhibition courts which provide spectator seating for over 100 people, and movable walls on one court which allows for doubles play.

Squash is yet another sport where the Club continues to attract top international standard tournaments and events. These include the inaugural World Doubles Tournament and a number of Women’s World Satellite Tournaments. However, it is the active Squash Section that makes squash such a significant sport within the Club. With over 20 squash teams, comprising around 10 players each, competing in local Men’s, Ladies’ and Masters’ squash leagues, the Club is the largest single participant on the Hong Kong Squash scene. Along with a host of internal tournaments, the Section competes in matches against local and touring clubs and arranges a number of overseas tours.

One qualified squash coach offers a range of lessons and coaching programmes but there are always courts available for booking by those Members who simply want a friendly game and a good run around !

Swimming Pool Complex

Swimming Pool Complex Opening Hours

Daily, 7:00am to 9:00pm

——————–

Once again, versatility and functionality are the hallmarks of our stunning Swimming Pool Complex. At 25 metres long the pool can be sectioned into swimming lanes for the serious length swimmers who recognise swimming as an exceptionally good form of exercise.

Swimming lessons for Members of all ages take place throughout the week and there is growing interest in the recently formed Adult Swimming Club to further develop Members’ participation in the sport.

But this facility is most popular, particularly at weekends, amongst Members and their families. With three children’s pools, a separate sun deck for serious sun worshippers and jacuzzis for soothing relaxation, as well as a Poolside Servery offering a range of light snacks and drinks, the Swimming Pool Complex is the perfect place for Members to get away from it all. It has even been heard described as ‘a wonderful oasis in the concrete jungle of Hong Kong!’

Along with clean, well-maintained changing and shower facilities, there are Steam and Sauna rooms to provide Members with a complete rejuvenation experience.

With the further development of the Servery, the poolside is also a very pleasant venue for informal evening barbecue buffet functions.
