Less than a month into the new season, around 40 of our junior youth players travelled to Singapore to participate in the Centaurs’ International Mini & Youth Rugby Tournament. This was a welcome return to competitive rugby after the summer break and a chance to re-engage with our Singapore based rugby friends and turbo charge the start to our season.
Under 8
For U8, it was a first tour for some of our young athletes and they had a fantastic time, scoring 14 tries during a challenging pool stage, before successfully defeating two teams from Singapore Dragons in their semi-final and final to win the Shield.
Under 9
U9 faced a difficult proposition, only having transitioned into contact rugby at the start of the season, much later than their Singapore counterparts. The HKFC boys didn’t let that hold them back, winning all three pool games to qualify for the cup bracket. An 8 try quarter final victory over Titans, followed by a narrow 5-4 win against Singapore Irish saw HKFC through to the cup final and an unfortunate loss to Singapore Dragons by 3 tries to 1. The boys were delighted with their well-deserved runners-up medals.
Under 10
U10 entered two teams, but had to rely on squad rotation as 19 players filled out two 10-a-side teams. Despite limited numbers and the harsh Singapore heat, both teams won all three pool games, with only one try conceded by HKFC. Both FC teams won their respective quarter finals against TRC and Titans, both winning without conceding a try.
By the semi-finals, scheduling meant concurrrent games and so a player disadvantage in one semi-final and eventual loss. In the other HKFC Blue fought valiantly, eventually eliminated with scores level after extra time, due to the opposition scoring the first try. This left HKFC placed 3rd and 4th
Punctuated by a spectacular rooftop tour dinner on the Saturday night, the tour provided lifelong memories for all our players, alongside the motivation to train even harder for the next one!
