The Hong Kong summer heat hasn’t stopped us from getting involved in rugby this summer!
One of the Youth Rugby’s community outreach projects this summer was to enter a mixed team in the Hong Kong China Rugby Summer Touch League, comprising of HKFC players and children from the nearby Po Leung Kok (PLK) Residence. The training sessions began just before the Hong Kong Sevens in April.
As a team comprised of children aged 14 and under, the team faced a formidable challenge as they were forced to register in the U16 division. Despite the challenge, the team demonstrated great resilience and adaptability – adjusting to the games’ structure and applying the skills they’d learn throughout all the months of hard training!
The humidity and heat in Hong Kong made playing touch rugby arduous. Each game was 30 minutes long, with two 15-minute halves. The referee called for additional water breaks to ensure the players stayed hydrated. The team also brought ice packs and neck coolers to help the players beat the heat (a big shout-out to coach Simon Hague!).
The biggest victory from entering a team into the Summer Touch League has been the camaraderie it has developed between the brought the HKFC and PLK players. The PLK players came up with their team’s name, designed their team logo and playing jerseys, and took turns serving as team captain on game days – a great opportunity to build their leadership & creativity skills. We’re glad that both HKFC & PLK players alike had lot of fun, learned new skills, and built friendships.
A big thanks to our coaching team who have helped facilitate a fantastic summer programme!
